Our Essential Carpentry Skills course is ideal for adults who want to learn carpentry and woodworking properly from the ground up. Over 10 weeks, you’ll develop practical workshop skills including measuring and marking timber, using hand tools safely, cutting joints, assembling simple projects, and building the confidence to progress into further carpentry or joinery training.

5-Week Intensive (Daytime)

Thursdays, 9:00am – 3:00pm
18th June – 16th July

A faster-paced version of the course, covering the full 30 hours over 5 weeks. Ideal for those who want to complete their training in a shorter time frame.


10-Week Evening Course

Mondays, 6:00pm – 9:00pm
Starting 7th September

A steady-paced evening course, ideal for those balancing work or other commitments.


Both formats cover the same course content and include 30 hours of practical training.

About the course

Course Overview

This beginner carpentry and joinery course introduces the core practical skills used in woodworking, timber preparation, hand tool use, and simple joint construction.

Over ten weeks, participants will learn how to safely use core hand tools while completing a series of guided practical exercises designed to build confidence and accuracy.

Participants will develop foundational carpentry techniques, including measuring and marking out timber, cutting basic woodworking joints and assembling simple components.

By the end of the course, learners will have completed several practical woodworking exercises and a small finished project, while gaining the core skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to progress to more advanced carpentry training such as the Fundamentals of Carpentry course.

What You Will Learn

During this course, participants will learn to:

  • Measure and mark out accurately

  • Select and safely use essential carpentry hand tools

  • Saw timber accurately

  • Cut and assemble basic woodworking joints

  • Use cordless drills and drivers

  • Sharpen tools correctly

Duration:
30 hours total

Delivered as either:

  • Evenings:
    10 weeks – 3 hours per week. Mondays, 6:00pm – 9:00pm

  • Daytime:
    5 weeks – 6 hours per week. Thursdays, 9:00am – 3:00pm

Introductory / Beginner

Qualification:
Non-accredited practical skills course.

Participants receive a certificate of participation confirming completion of a 30-hour Essential Carpentry Skills Course.

Participants will work primarily with quality softwood, which is ideal for learning core carpentry skills. It is lighter, easier to work with using hand tools, and allows participants to focus on developing accuracy and technique.
